By now readers are quite familiar with the clerical sexual abuse crisis that is still unfolding. The precipitating matter is the sexual abuse of minors by priests, but it is impossible to abstract this issue from a plethora of others which have been mentioned many times: clerical culture, episcopal cover-ups, lack of reporting mechanisms, the construction of sexuality in the Catholic Church, the role of women and laity in the church’s life, the need for fundamental ecclesiastical reform, and serious questions this latest wave of crisis has triggered. The picture will only grow more complex as we learn more about abuse of religious women, a distinct problem, but not unrelated when we consider sex abuse and rape as crimes of power over the vulnerable.
